Alışverişe gidelim - lets go shopping
Shopping …like it or loathe it we all have to do it.
Shopping for clothes in Turkey can be a nightmare if you havent got somewhere like Debenhams where you just pick what you want off the racks….and you havent the vocabulary to get what you want.
Take heart girls..here comes da help!!!
Lets start with some handy words then put them into a few useful sentences.
As this is just a simple basic piece then you can ignore the different endings you might notice on some words…but if you want to really get into Turkish...then learning about these is both fun and neccessary.
And...to be understood the endings are a must.
Shopping = alışveriş (say it: al-ush-ver-ish)
To go out shopping = alışverişe çıkmak
i am going out shopping = alışverişe çıkıyorum
or
tomorrow i will go shopping = yarın alışverişE çıkacağım
That little E on the end means TO...shopping to i will go.
Çıkıyorum...(say it: chick-uh-yorum)....in the here and now (present tense)
Çıkacağım...(say it: chick-ah-jay-ım)....in the future
Gidelim = let’s go
Of course you have to take cash or a card....
Para = money
peşin para = ready money/cash
Credit card = kredi kartı
Now lets hit the shops

And giysi means clothes..its a general word for all kinds of clothing.

Asking = sormak
How to ask how much is this..or that..:
“Bu ceket ne kadar?” = How much is this jacket?
or
“Bu ceket kaç para?” = How much money is this jacket?
I prefer to use “Ne kadar?”….but either way is fine.
Numara = sizes (..is for shoes!)
“Kaç numara ayakkabı istiyorsun?” =
What size shoes do you want?
“Herhalde otuzyedi.....ingiliz numara beş.” =
I suppose thirty seven....english size 5.
When talking about clothes the word for size is “beden”.
“Bu tişört çok güzel. Daha büyük beden var mı?”
This t-shirt is nice. Do you have a bigger size?
“Daha büyük yok efendim.”
No, we dont have it bigger Madam.
“Başka bir renkler var mı?”
Do you have different colours?
“Evet. Başka renkler var.”
Yes. There are different colours.
“Hangi renk ister misiniz?”
What colour would you like?
“Getirip, seçerim.” (say it: setch er eem)
Bring and i will chose.
Boy = height
boylu = tall
kısa = short
kısa boylu = short height
You may be asked: “Başka bir arzu var mı efendim?”
Do you have any other wishes/desires….do you want anything else (in a polite form).
Or sometimes you will be asked.
“Başka bir şey ister misiniz?”
Do you want anything else.
Başka = another and also different
Can i change it if it doesnt fit
“Bu giysiyi arkadaş için alıyoru.”
I’m buying this for a friend.
“Sorun çıkarsa değiştirmem mümkün mü acaba?”
(say it: sorun chıckarsa..deyish teer mem..moom koon moo ajaba)
If there is a problem is it possible to change it i wonder.
Dar = narrow
“Bu etek beğeniyorum ama bir az dar.”
I like this skirt but its a bit tight.
“Benim basen bir az geniş..!!!”
...more than a little..too much chockie
my backside is a little broad.
To ask if something suits you:
“Bu bana yakıştı mı?”
Does this suit me?
